When I was in graduate school, I was in love with the movie Closer. I had been going through a particularly angst-filled reflection period about why I was single, and Closer seemed to reaffirm my suspicions – that romantic relationships were not only viciously flawed, but that they destroyed one’s soul as well. Love was not romantic, it was passive aggressive vindictiveness. Yes, it was a particularly angst-filled time.
So nobody was more surprised but me to find out that some relationships were not as venomous and vindictive as I once proclaimed.
These days I’m trying to find a few more positive examples of relationships to emulate, and there’s no one on tv I like more than The Office’s Jim and Pam. It’s refreshing, that in a glammed up multi-marriage world of Gossip Girl-esq shows, this couple stands out as the most beautiful in their realness. They aren’t rich, they aren’t gorgeous in an Upper East Side sort of way, and they don’t ooze sappy romance. But in a fictional way, they depict a relatively real portrayal of love and companionship.
Therefore, like Jim and Pam, may my marriage be able to withstand the insanity of the world around us through our commitment to each other.
